About this Artwork

Ken Dewar graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 1984, and set up shop in Calgary soon after. He has worked as a professional Illustrator for the past 21 years, with numerous advertising and editorial accounts both locally and internationally. Ken’s art is drawn from a deep and honest curiosity about people in general. As he explains in his own words: “Whether it is the whimsical fantasy world of the romantic Victorian era or more serious themes, it is all based on my belief that we are all here to experience humanity. To try and show humanity at its best is my passion; also, to try and be versatile in whatever art you choose has always been my philosophy.”

Giclée + Other Art Terms

Giclée: From the French verb gicler, meaning, “to spray.” It is pronounced “zhee-clay”. The giclée process uses an incredibly accurate computer-controlled jet to apply ink to watercolor paper, canvas or etching paper. These unique jets are able to vary the width of the ink stream to as small as 1/100th the width of human hair. Giclées have a higher resolution than offset lithographs and the dynamic color range is greater than serigraph. Giclée reproductions are used to produce museum quality, fine art reproductions. In the art world it is generally regarded as the highest quality reproduction available.

Ken Dewar

Bio

Ken was born in June of 1960, on the northern air force base of Cold Lake, Alberta.   As a child, he wanted to become either an astronaut or an artist, but would get sick on the playground swing set, so the die was cast. In 1984, he graduated from the Alberta College of Art and immediately set upon a successful freelance career in the advertising and illustration market place. Lasting over thirty-five years it culminated in numerous awards and recognition around the world. With Illustration reps in Toronto, New York, London, and Los Angles, all securing him challenging, yet exciting projects. In 1999, for almost a decade, he also became a military artist, completing both private and commissioned paintings and prints for the Canadian, American, and German military. Fun and adventurous times, that almost included being flattened by a tank in mock battle.    In 2001, he became a sessional instructor at his old alma mater, the Alberta College of Art and Design, and for the next nineteen years, taught the disciplines of drawing and rendering skills. From the very beginning and throughout the last forty years, Whenever life slipped him a little spare time, he would dutifully work on his own art. A deeply meaningful and spiritual belief that happiness and purpose are found in the simple things, and that the beautiful in this world, always surrounds. You just have to imagine it.
